From 5 to 25 March 2026, the exhibition The Shared Strength of 50 Caribbean Foremothers will be on view in the Atrium City Hall.

Our HERitage: 50 Caribbean Foremothers is a two-year interdisciplinary heritage project that places the lives and legacies of Caribbean foremothers at its centre. The exhibition brings women who lived within systems of slavery, indentured labour and colonial hierarchies out of the footnotes of history, creating space for their voices to be heard.

The portraits are the result of archival research, oral history and close collaboration with communities and descendants, carried out by an interdisciplinary team—many of whom themselves are connected to a foremother featured in the exhibition. By bringing together fragmented traces, powerful stories emerge that reveal the diversity of Caribbean histories and the many ways these women shaped family life, care, labour and resistance.

“This is not a new story. It is HERstory, finally told.” — Our HERitage

Our HERitage challenges stereotypical representations by presenting Caribbean women not as a single narrative, but as a multi-voiced constellation of backgrounds, positions and experiences. At the same time, the exhibition connects past and present by making visible the strength, reflections and ongoing impact of these histories in the lives of descendants today.

The exhibition is complemented by a public programme at The Hague Central Library on 14 March, featuring conversations, workshops and guided tours through the exhibition. Visitors are invited to pause, to listen to voices long overlooked, and to reflect on how history continues to shape the present.

Our HERitage invites visitors to look, listen and reflect. It shows that heritage is not only something to preserve, but also something to understand anew—and to develop together.
