An exhibition dedicated to the spaces where art is produced in The Hague is on view in the Atrium City Hall between November 16 and December 1. In these so-called ‘incubator spaces’ (broedplaatsen), artists and other creative makers collaborate on artworks that reach audiences across the globe. The exhibition offers a glimpse into a creative network that typically remains invisible to the general public.

An incubato space or ‘broedplaats’ is a building where artists and other creative professionals work together, experiment, and develop new ideas. The Hague is home to a significant number of such workspaces. These incubators are vital to the city, contributing to the cultural landscape of The Hague and well beyond.

In June 2026, the incubators of The Hague formally joined forces by establishing an association. This exhibition marks the association’s first public appearance. Seven of The Hague’s broedplaatsen are presenting themselves in the City Hall Atrium, showcasing works created within their respective spaces. The exhibition illustrates how these artis-run inititiatives are established and how they function, providing insight into the city’s cultural output and the great diversity of these creative hubs. The works on display span various disciplines—from spatial installations to collaborative tile murals and wall paintings. Also featured is a 3D scale model of an incubator, populated with miniature artworks.

Against the backdrop of an increasing shortage of space and rapidly rising rents, the Association of The Hague Incubator spaces (*Vereniging Haagse Broedplaatsen*) also intends for this exhibition to highlight the urgent need for affordable creative workspaces in The Hague. By stepping into the public eye, the association hopes to draw attention to the importance of a favorable environment for both emerging and established artists—artists who can continue to enrich the city with innovative ideas and a vibrant cultural life well into the future.

Participating creative hubs in The Hague include: … ism project space, Annastate, Billytown, Maakhaven, Patch Studios, Quartair and West End..
