Walking through The Hague, you encounter traces of the colonial past everywhere. Examples include buildings such as the former Ministry of the Colonies (see photo), the many Indonesian and Surinamese restaurants and the street names in Bezuidenhout and Archipelbuurt neighborhoods. The composition of The Hague’s population also makes this past visible.

In 2023, the Hague Historical Museum reflected on this past with the exhibition Colonial The Hague, an unfinished past. From August 14 to August 29 to 4PM, some stories from this exhibition can be discovered in the Atrium City Hall.

The Hague Historical Museum
The Hague Historical Museum is not only the place where the history of The Hague comes to life, but also literally a historical place. In the building where the shooters of the Saint Sebastian Guild once met, you will now find treasures from the city’s history. Special paintings and admirable objects tell the story of The Hague. In addition to the permanent presentations, they always have temporary exhibitions on themes from the city, such as the exhibition Hague Harry, dûh tetaunstelling!!

From October 2024, the Hague Historical Museum will be renovated for the coming years. The building is being renovated, expanded and made more accessible. The permanent presentations and the public program will also be renewed. The plan is for the museum to be ready for the future again in 2027.
